Roma
L.S.S ‘F. Enriques’ is a state high school situated in the 10th district of Rome, one of the most
densely populated and with a high number of young people. At present we have 1562 students of 20
different nationalities aged 14-18, 65 classes located in two different buildings (situated about 12 Km apart in Ostia Lido and Acilia respectively) and 121 teachers. Lessons take place in the morning from 8.30 to 1.30 Mondays to Saturdays, but our school P.T.O.F. (Three-year plan of educational offer)
has a variety of afternoon classes and workshops (theatre workshops in Italian, English, French and Spanish, ECDL courses, foreign language certificates, Russian, Chinese and Arabic courses, Italian courses for foreign students, IMUN project, etc.) that provide the students with further opportunities
to learn in a more creative and exciting context: both the teaching staff and the management are particularly proud of the Institute's educational offer that has been enriched constantly over the years . The school year consists of two terms of three and five months each. In our school students can
choose between two different courses: scientific and foreign languages studies (the former is the original nucleus of the school, the latter started with some experimental classes approved by MIUR few decades ago and, after the latest school reform in 2010-11, has become the new ‘Liceo
Linguistico’ with ten sections now). The main subjects taught are: Italian language and literature, Latin language and literature, History and Philosophy, Foreign Languages and Literatures (English, French, German and Spanish), Maths, Physics, Science, History of Art, P.E. and Religion. The latest
school reforms in Italy envisage English (and other foreign languages) as the means of teaching contents related to non-linguistic subjects - CLIL - and our institution has taken all the necessary steps to introduce this methodology in our classes : to this purpose, some teachers have already attended special English language training courses and started CLIL in their classes (in English and Spanish so far). The teaching of foreign languages has always concentrated on communicative skills and according to the latest school reform, it will also require the implementation of newer strategies
(CLIL methodology) aimed at developing those abilities in order to enable our students to move freely worldwide and get to know foreign life-styles, cultures and education systems, thus fostering their international awareness. To this purpose, the school also offers free afternoon courses to prepare our students for certificates in the foreign languages taught in the morning classes (DELE, DELF, PET, FCE and CAE, Goethe Zertificat). These courses, mainly held by teachers of our school, are particularly popular among our students, because they can enrich their CVs, get special credits for
their university studies and choose to study/work in an international context in the future.
